Belgian Piron Brigade Memorial, Opheusden, Holland

Opheusden was the centre of much fighting involving British, American and Belgian forces following the failure of Operation Market Garden to cross the Rhine at Arnhem. Inside the town hall here is a Memorial Screaming Eagle to the 101st AB Division and another on an outside wall. Also there is this Piron Brigade emblem in recognition of the Brigades 3rd Battalion clearing of Opheusden on 18 April 1945. The Brigade landed on Gold Beach on D-Day and moved north just inside the French coastline, their progress marked now by a series of memorials similar to this one. The full story of the Brigade is told in Au Galop de Nos Blindes, written by Lieutenant-General Roger Dewandre of the Belgian army who, as a Lieutenant, landed with the Pirons.

101st 2001 Arnhem Belgian D Day Dday Division Eagle Failure Forces Holland Involving Operation Piron Rhine Screaming

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the Belgian Piron Brigade Memorial, located in the heart of Opheusden, Holland. Opheusden played a pivotal role in the post-D-Day fighting involving British, American, and Belgian forces following the failure of Operation Market Garden to cross the Rhine at Arnhem in September 1945. Inside the town hall, you'll find a Memorial Screaming Eagle dedicated to the 101st Airborne Division, and another emblem on an outside wall in recognition of the 3rd Battalion of the Piron Brigade's heroic clearing of Opheusden on April 18, 1945. The Piron Brigade, which landed on Gold Beach on D-Day, moved north just inside the French coastline, leaving a trail of memorials in their wake. The full story of the Brigade's remarkable journey is chronicled in "Au Galop de Nos Blindes," a book written by Lieutenant-General Roger Dewandre of the Belgian army. As a Lieutenant, Dewandre himself landed with the Piron Brigade. The Piron Brigade Memorial in Opheusden stands as a testament to the bravery and determination of the soldiers who fought to liberate this town from the grip of the German forces. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II and the enduring bonds of alliance and friendship between the Belgian, American, and British forces.
