1. Title: In Quest of Water: The Benin Expedition, 1897 2.. The morning after the British occupation of Benin City in Nigeria, three hundred water-carriers, accompanied by the seamen and marines of HMS Theseus and two companies of Houssa soldiers, embarked on a quest for water. The successful capture of Benin, the ancient capital of the Edo people, had taken place on February 18, 1897. The British, led by Colonel Frederick Jackson, had entered the city following a prolonged siege, during which the residents had put up fierce resistance. With the occupation complete, the British forces faced a new challenge: securing a reliable water source for their growing camp. Descending a steep gorge with cliffs towering two hundred feet high, the group reached Ikpobar Creek, their destination. The creek, located near modern-day Benin City, provided the much-needed water for the British troops and their allies. This photograph, taken in 1897, captures a pivotal moment during the Benin Expedition. The image shows the determined group of water-carriers, seamen, marines, and Houssa soldiers making their way to the creek, their efforts symbolizing the challenges and necessities of maintaining a military presence in a new and unfamiliar environment. The 1890s marked a significant period of British colonial expansion in West Africa, and the Benin Expedition stands as a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of those who participated in these historic events.
