EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Sebin after an original illustration by Oudart for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris in 1849, showcases an intriguing collection of elusive and fascinating reptiles. The central figure is the Black-and-white worm lizard, scientifically known as Amphisbaena fuliginosa, also referred to as the earthworm blind snake. This unique creature, native to South America, possesses a long, slender body resembling an earthworm, with rings of tiny scales and a distinct head at both ends. Two other snakes are depicted alongside the worm lizard. The first, Typhlops lumbricalis, is an earthworm blind snake, characterized by its long, cylindrical body and lack of eyes. The second snake, Pseudotyphlops philippinus (now known as Uropeltis philippinus), is a large shieldtail snake, native to the Philippines. Its body is adorned with large, shield-like scales, and it has a distinctive, flat, fan-like tail. This exquisite engraving provides a glimpse into the natural history of these remarkable creatures, which were studied and documented during the 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these elusive reptiles to life, offering a captivating window into the rich biodiversity of our planet.
