EDITORS COMMENTS
Musical Comedy: A Timeless Tale of Youth and Age-Defying Humor The Boy, a musical comedy by Fred Thompson and Percy Greenbank, is a delightful production that first graced the stage at the Adelphi Theatre in London on September 14, 1917. Adapted from A.W. Pinero's play, The Magistrate, and featuring music by Lionel Monckton and Howard Talbot, this popular entertainment ran for an impressive 801 performances. At the heart of the production lies a central joke: the boy, played by Thompson, is older than his stated age due to his mother's error in recording her own age. This amusing predicament makes the boy an irresistible target for the young women in the play, who are more than happy to "grab" him. In this photograph, taken circa 1918 during a touring production by MacDonald and Young at the Kursaal in Bognor, we see a scene from the musical comedy. A young woman, dressed in a vibrant yellow evening gown and holding a fan, shares a moment with the boy. He, in his green costume, appears to be enjoying the dance, his expression one of fun and enjoyment. The other men in the background, some with their partners, also seem to be having a great time. The 1910s setting is brought to life through the elegant costumes and the lively atmosphere. The Boy, with its catchy music and witty humor, was a testament to the popularity of musical comedies during this era. The play's enduring appeal continues to entertain audiences today, making it a cherished piece of theatre history.
