EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts two prized Brown-breasted Red Game Birds, the Statue, winner of the Challenge Cup at Birmingham in 1886, and the Little Queen, victor of the cup at Liverpool in 1887. Bred by the renowned poultry breeder C.W. Brierley, these birds were the epitome of exotic beauty during the Victorian era's ornithological craze. The intricately detailed illustration, created by J.W. Ludlow and published in Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry in 1890, showcases the birds' vibrant plumage and proud posture. The Brown-breasted Red Game Birds, also known as the Brown-breasted Cockerel or the Brown-breasted Fowl, were a popular breed during this time due to their striking appearance and supposed fighting prowess. The male bird, or cock, is depicted with a proud, regal stance, displaying his brilliant red feathers and golden-brown breast. The female, or hen, is shown nestled amongst a pile of dairy produce, symbolizing her role as a provider of fresh eggs. The birds were often displayed at agricultural shows, such as the Crystal Palace Dairy Show in 1885, where they would be judged based on their appearance, health, and fertility. The Victorian fascination with poultry breeding and ornithology led to the creation of many elaborate and detailed illustrations, like this one by Vincent Brooks Day & Son. The intricacy and beauty of this chromolithograph serve as a testament to the time and effort invested in the breeding and exhibition of these exotic birds during the late 19th century. Despite the historical significance of this image, it's important to note that the practice of cockfighting, which was once associated with the breeding and exhibition of these birds, is now considered cruel and inhumane.
