EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a proud Brown Leghorn or Livorno chicken, one of the most popular breeds during the Victorian era's poultry craze. The intricately detailed illustration, created by J.W. Ludlow and published in Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry in 1890, showcases the bird's vibrant golden-brown plumage, with each feather meticulously rendered. The Brown Leghorn, a variety of the common domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus), was highly sought after for its excellent egg-laying abilities and distinctive appearance. The image captures the essence of the chicken's regal demeanor, with its alert, piercing gaze and proudly raised crest. The Brown Leghorn was not only admired for its ornamental value but also for its utility, as its lean meat was considered a delicacy and was used in the preparation of dishes such as hamburgers or hamburghs. During the late 19th century, the breeding and showing of exotic poultry became a popular pastime among the upper classes, with poultry shows and competitions drawing large crowds. The Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1871, for instance, featured a poultry section where breeders showcased their finest specimens. The Brown Leghorn, with its striking appearance and desirable traits, was a regular contender in these events. Despite its popularity, the Brown Leghorn's history is not without controversy. The breed was also associated with cockfighting, an activity that was both legal and socially acceptable during the Victorian era. The image of the rooster, with its sharp spurs and aggressive stance, serves as a reminder of this darker side of the chicken's past. This beautiful chromolithograph, produced by Vincent Brooks Day & Son, offers a glimpse into the rich history of poultry breeding and the fascination with exotic fowl during the Victorian era.
