EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the solemn and moving Canadian Memorial on Hill 62, located near the Belgian town of Ieper, or Ypres, in Belgium. Dedicated to the brave Canadian soldiers who fought and died during the First World War, this poignant tribute stands as a testament to their sacrifice and bravery. The memorial, which was unveiled in 2002, is situated on the site of the Second Battle of Ypres, one of the first major battles of World War I and the first time that poison gas was used on a large scale. The battle took place between April and May 1915, and the Canadian Corps played a crucial role in defending the town against the German onslaught. The memorial consists of a large cross, surrounded by a circular wall inscribed with the names of over 5,000 Canadian soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. The cross, which stands at a height of 15 meters, is made of white Carrara marble and is adorned with a bronze maple leaf at its peak. The memorial is a popular destination for visitors to the area, who come to pay their respects and reflect on the sacrifices made by the Canadian soldiers during the war. The photograph, taken in 2016, captures the memorial in all its glory, with the sun casting a warm light over the cross and the surrounding landscape. The peaceful scene is a stark contrast to the chaos and destruction that once engulfed this area during the war. The Canadian Memorial on Hill 62 is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the Canadian soldiers during the First World War, and serves as a symbol of hope and remembrance for future generations.
