This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock in 1786 for Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (The Butterflies and Moths in Representations according to Nature), showcases four intriguing Lepidoptera species: Canephora hirsuta (Hairy Sweep Moth), Ocneria detrita (Detritus Oak Eggar), and Epichnopterix plumella (Pale Epichnopterix). The Hairy Sweep Moth, also known as Canephora hirsuta, is a nocturnal moth with a wingspan of up to 3.5 centimeters. Its caterpillars feed on various oak species and are covered in long, golden hairs. Ocneria detrita, or the Detritus Oak Eggar, is a moth with a wingspan of approximately 3 centimeters. Its larvae are commonly found in decaying wood and leaf litter, feeding on fungi and other organic matter. The adult moths have a wingspan of around 3 centimeters and are typically found in wooded areas. Epichnopterix plumella, or the Pale Epichnopterix, is a small moth with a wingspan of only 1.5 centimeters. Its caterpillars feed on various herbs and grasses, and the adults have a wingspan of around 2 centimeters. The wings of this moth are covered in fine, pale scales, giving it a delicate appearance. This engraving also includes two additional moth species, Phalaena vestita (Pale Wave), and Phalaena atra (Black Wave), which can be seen in the bottom left and right corners of the image, respectively. The Pale Wave has a wingspan of up to 5 centimeters, while the Black Wave has a wingspan of up to 7 centimeters. Both species are known for their distinctive wave-like patterns on their wings.
