In this poignant photograph, the Captain Noel Chavasse Virtual Cross Memorial stands proudly in the tranquil grounds of Brandhoek Church in Ieper, Belgium. The memorial was unveiled on 29 August 1997, during a solemn ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the death of the double Victoria Cross (VC) winner, Captain Noel Godfrey Chavasse. The event was attended by a delegation of the London Scottish Territorials, who paid tribute to the bravery and heroism of their fallen comrade. Captain Chavasse, who was posthumously awarded the VC twice during World War I, is considered one of the most decorated soldiers in British military history. He was first honored for his actions during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, when he saved the lives of several soldiers under his command by carrying them to safety despite being severely wounded himself. He was later awarded a second VC for his actions during the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917, when he treated wounded soldiers under heavy fire, ultimately sacrificing his own life to save another. The memorial, which features a statue of Captain Chavasse in military uniform, is a tribute to his remarkable bravery and selflessness. A Union flag is often flown beside it as a symbol of respect and remembrance for the heroic actions of this remarkable soldier.
