EDITORS COMMENTS
Captain Johnny Newcome, a beloved and respected figure in the British Navy, bids farewell to his old crew members and veterans at Greenwich Hospital in this poignant handcoloured copperplate engraving. The scene depicts the Captain in his full uniform, surrounded by midshipmen in crisp white uniforms, as well as peg-legged veterans with walking sticks, all gathered in the Captain's cabin. In the background, ships sail up the River Thames, their flags at half-mast in a show of respect for the departing Captain. This moving moment marks Captain Newcome's visit to Greenwich Hospital and his departure from the Navy. The Admiral, flanked by hearty officers, raises a glass of wine in a toast to the Captain, while the crew shares a drink in the mess. The room is adorned with nautical symbols, such as anchors, swords, and axes, reflecting the seafaring life they all share. This beautiful illustration, created by Charles Williams and published in John Mitford's "Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy" in 1819, captures the spirit of camaraderie and tradition that defined the Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The image is a testament to the enduring bonds formed between sailors and the sense of adventure and exploration that characterized the British colonialism and empire during the Regency and Georgian eras.
