EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1795, showcases an array of intricately detailed fish species. The illustration includes three varieties of carp (Cyprinus carpio 1, 2), the barbel (Barbus barbus 3), and five other types of fish: pike-perch (Sander lucioperca 4), European perch (Perca fluviatilis 5), carp, cyprinus, carpio, barbel, barbus, pike perch, sander, lucioperca, european, perch, perca, fluviatilis. The carp, a common and popular fish in European waters, is depicted in two different forms. The first carp (C. carpio 1) exhibits a mirror-like reflection on its scales, while the second (C. carpio 2) displays a more typical pattern. The barbel, another common European fish, is characterized by its long, whisker-like barbels, which are used to detect food in murky waters. The remaining fish in the illustration include the pike-perch, also known as the European walleye (Sander lucioperca), which is a predatory fish with a distinctive elongated body and sharp teeth. The European perch (Perca fluviatilis), also known as the common perch, is a popular game fish with a vibrant coloration and a distinctive vertical black stripe. This exquisite engraving is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of the time and serves as an educational tool for children to learn about the diverse range of fish species found in European waters. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring each fish to life, making this an essential addition to any ichthyological or historical collection.
