Jacques Cartier, a French explorer, had set sail from France in search of new lands and resources. He had already discovered the St. Lawrence River and had established a settlement at present-day Quebec City. However, during this third voyage, his ships became trapped in the ice, forcing him and his crew to spend the winter in the New World. Despite the harsh conditions, the crew managed to survive, and Cartier continued his exploration of the region in the spring.
