EDITORS COMMENTS
This cartoon from 1885 depicts the renowned theatrical duo, Messrs. Stephens and Yardley, taking matters into their own hands and assuming the roles of the Vicar of Bray themselves. The Vicar of Bray is a reference to a popular comic operetta of the same name, which tells the story of a vicar who changes his religious allegiance to suit the political climate. William Yardley (1849-1900, left), a first-class cricketer, actor, playwright, and drama critic, and Henry Pottinger Stephens (1851-1903, right), a dramatist and journalist, are seen here dressed in formal attire, checking their lines and ready for the stage. The two men collaborated on the libretto of a burlesque melodrama titled "Little Jack Sheppard," which opened at the Gaiety Theatre in December 1885. The cartoon's caption reads "1885 (entracte, entr'acte, acte, cartoon, cartoons, Alfred Bryan, 24th October, 1885, 1880s, late Victorian, Stephens, Yardley, men, Messrs., Vicar, Bray, William, cricketer, actor, playwright, drama critic, writer, author, collaborator, collaborators, check, jacket, trousers, suit)," indicating the date and context of the production. Despite their busy schedules, Messrs. Stephens and Yardley were not deterred by the demands of the theatrical world and continued to make their mark on the stage, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of Victorian entertainment.
