EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock after Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur, showcases three exquisite moths: Catocala hymenaea, Amerila puella, and Isturgia famula. The image captures the Old World charm of natural history illustration, with intricate detail and vibrant colors. The largest moth in the print is the Underwing, or Catocala hymenaea. Its wings display striking black and orange patterns, with distinctive white markings near the edges. The Mormo or Eastern Lady, represented by Amerila puella, is a smaller moth with delicate wings adorned with intricate patterns of brown, white, and black. The third moth, Isturgia famula, is depicted as the Alchymist or Aedia, with its wings displaying a striking pattern of white, black, and red. The metamorphosis of these moths from caterpillar to adult is a fascinating process. As pupae, they undergo a complete transformation, shedding their old exoskeletons and emerging as beautiful, winged creatures. The Lepidoptera order, to which these moths belong, includes both butterflies and moths, and is characterized by their pupal stage. The print also features several other moths, including Leucomelas dypterygia, Scabriuscula noctua, Pinastri triperygia, and others. Each moth is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and this engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of documenting and preserving such wonders for future generations.
