EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles the Bald, also known as Carolus Calvus or Carlo il Calvo, is depicted in this stunning 9th century illustration from a Bible presented to the emperor by the canons of St. Martin of Tours. Seated confidently on his ornate throne, Charles wears an extraordinary crown adorned with gold and precious stones, symbolizing his imperial power. His short, bald head is framed by a halo, indicating his divine right to rule. Charles holds a long sceptre topped with a golden orb, signifying his authority over his vast territories, which included modern-day France, Belgium, and parts of Germany. Two squires stand on either side of him, each holding a significant weapon: a great sword, a spear, and a shield. This historical image provides a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of the Carolingian Empire during the Middle Ages. Charles the Bald was the eldest son of Louis the Pious and brother to Louis the German and Lothair I. He ruled from 840 until his death in 877. Charles was known for his close relationship with the Benedictine monasteries, particularly those in Orleans, Reims, and St. Paul in Rome. This Bible, a symbol of his piety and devotion, was likely a gift from one of these monasteries. The illustration is a handcoloured copperplate engraving by Roberti, taken from Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1844. The image also features angels and various saints, emphasizing the religious significance of the Bible and the emperor's role as a protector of the faith.
