EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles Clarence as Rodolphe in Les Mystères de Paris, 1844: A Theatrical Portrait of Passion and Deception This handcoloured lithograph depicts the renowned French actor Charles Clarence in the title role of Rodolphe in Eugène Sue's Les Mystères de Paris, which premiered at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris in 1844. Based on Sue's popular novel of the same name, the play was a sensation, with Clarence's portrayal of the enigmatic and dangerous Rodolphe earning widespread acclaim. Rodolphe, a member of the criminal underworld in Paris, is a complex character who is both seducer and seduced. In the play, he falls in love with the innocent and naive Felicité, played by the actress Alexandrine Lacauchie. However, Rodolphe's past comes back to haunt him, and he is ultimately driven to betray her, leading to tragic consequences. This lithograph, created by Victor Dollet and published in the Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Théâtres de Paris, offers a glimpse into the theatrical world of the 1840s and the captivating performance of Charles Clarence as Rodolphe. Clarence's intense gaze and dramatic pose convey the passion and deception that define the character, making this a fascinating and intriguing image from a bygone era of French theatre.
