EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles Hoster, also known as Phileas Salvator Levilly, brilliantly portrays the menacing character of Lecorche in the 1844 production of "La Corde de Pendu" (The Gallows' Noose) at the Theatre du Cirque Olympique in Paris. This handcoloured lithograph, created by Ferdinand Laloue and Anicet Bourgeois, is based on an illustration by Alexandre Lacauchie from Victor Dollet's "Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Theatres de Paris" (1845). Lecorche, a notorious criminal, is depicted here in the midst of his daring escape from the gallows. With a determined expression and a cunning glint in his eye, Hoster masterfully conveys Lecorche's desperation and resolve. The artist's skillful use of colour and shading adds depth and texture to the image, bringing the character to life and capturing the tension and excitement of the scene. The Theatre du Cirque Olympique was a popular venue for circus and theatrical performances during the mid-19th century. "La Corde de Pendu" was a popular play during this time, and Hoster's portrayal of Lecorche was undoubtedly a highlight of the production. This stunning lithograph serves as a testament to the actor's talent and the enduring appeal of this classic theatrical performance. The intricate details of Hoster's costume, from the frayed shirt and tattered trousers to the worn boots and tattered hat, add to the authenticity of the image and further enhance the character's menacing presence. This unique and captivating print is a must-have for any collection of historical theatrical memorabilia or for anyone interested in the history of French theatre and the art of performance.
