EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1792, showcases the awe-inspiring city walls of Babylon. The image highlights two of Babylon's most renowned wonders: the Hanging Gardens and the Tower of Babel. Babylon, an ancient city located in present-day Iraq, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its walls, depicted in this engraving, were a testament to the city's grandeur and military might. The walls encircled the entire city, providing protection and security to its inhabitants. The Hanging Gardens, depicted at the center of the image, were a series of terraced gardens built for King Nebuchadnezzar II's wife, who longed for the greenery of her homeland. This architectural marvel was an engineering feat, with lush vegetation cascading down from the top to the bottom of the gardens. The Tower of Babel, another wonder of Babylon, can be seen in the background. According to legend, this tower was built by the people of Babylon in an attempt to reach the heavens. However, God, displeased with their arrogance, confounded their language and scattered them across the earth. This illustration, taken from an educational encyclopedia for children, served to pique their curiosity about the natural and historical wonders of the world. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the hand-colored copperplate engraving transport us back in time, allowing us to marvel at the ancient city of Babylon and its wonders as if we were there.
