Claridges Hotel

Claridges was founded in 1812 as Mivarts Hotel, in a conventional London terraced house, and it grew by expanding into neighbouring houses. In 1854, the founder (the father of biologist St. George Jackson Mivart) sold the hotel to a Mr and Mrs Claridge, who owned a smaller hotel next door. They combined the two operations, and after trading for a time as Mivarts at Claridges, they settled on the current name. Date: 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to 1875 with this image of Claridge's Hotel, a London institution that began its journey over two centuries ago. Originally founded in 1812 as Mivarts Hotel in a conventional London terraced house, the hotel grew by expanding into neighboring properties. In 1854, the hotel was sold to a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Claridge, who owned a smaller hotel next door. They combined their operations, and after trading for a time under the name Mivarts at Claridges, they eventually settled on the current moniker. This photograph, taken in 1875, captures the elegance and charm of the hotel during the Victorian era. The ornate facade, adorned with intricate details, reflects the opulence and sophistication of the period. The horse-drawn carriages parked in front of the hotel suggest a time when travel was a leisurely affair, and guests could arrive in style. Claridge's Hotel has a rich history, having played host to numerous famous guests over the years, including royalty, politicians, and celebrities. Today, it remains a symbol of luxury and refinement, continuing to attract visitors from around the world who seek a taste of London's storied past.
