The Colossus of Rhodes: A Marvel of Ancient Engineering and Mythology This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children) published in Weimar in 1792, depicts the legendary Colossus of Rhodes. The Colossus was an ancient Greek statue of the sun god Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes around 280 BC. The statue stood approximately 11 meters (36 feet) tall and was constructed to celebrate Rhodes' victory over an invading army. The Colossus was a marvel of ancient engineering and was said to straddle the harbor entrance, holding a torch in one hand and a bow in the other. It was reportedly so large that two ships could sail under its legs. This illustration, created by Christiane Henriette Dorothea Westermayr, offers a captivating glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine the grandeur and awe that the Colossus inspired in ancient times. The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a collection of architectural and natural marvels that inspired wonder and fascination throughout the ancient world. The image of the Colossus, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, serves as a testament to the educational and encyclopedic purposes of picture books for children in the late 18th century. This illustration not only provided visual knowledge but also sparked the imagination and curiosity of young minds, instilling a lifelong appreciation for the natural and classical world.
