A Penny for Your Thoughts on Running, Mate? (Scotsman Discusses Runners' Training, Early 20th Century) This delightfully humorous comic postcard, published in the early 20th century, depicts a Scotsman in full traditional Scottish regalia - kilt, sporran, and all - engaged in a deep conversation with a runner. The Scotsman, with a quizzical expression, asks, "How much does it cost ye to run a mile, eh?", to which the runner, looking rather sheepish, replies, "About a pound these days." The Scotsman, taken aback by the answer, exclaims, "A pound! That's a lot of money! I'll tell you, I remember when a mile only cost a penny. And that was for the Epsom Salts too!" The runner, desperate to change the subject, quickly moves on to discuss the economic benefits of running, explaining how it's an economical way to stay fit and save on doctor's bills. The Scotsman, still skeptical, asks, "But what about the cost of a new pair of shoes every few months? And the toilet paper for all that training?" The runner, now looking even more desperate, quickly answers, "Oh, I've got that covered. I've been saving up my pennies." This comical exchange between the Scotsman and the runner is a lighthearted commentary on the cost of running and the lengths people go to in order to stay fit. The use of Scottish humor and the traditional Scottish setting adds an extra layer of charm to this fun and funny postcard.
