EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Common Guava, scientifically known as Psidium guajava, also referred to as yellow guava, lemon guava, or mombin. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The Common Guava is a small, evergreen tree native to Central America and the Caribbean, now widely cultivated in tropical regions around the world. Its edible fruit, which ranges from yellow to pink or maroon when ripe, is a popular source of food and nutrition. The tree is also known as the hog plum or strawberry guava due to its fleshy, sweet, and slightly gritty texture, which resembles that of a strawberry. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. The engraving was executed by Cellai, published by Batelli e Figli. The Common Guava has historical significance in botany, as it was first formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 and later classified by Antoine Laurent de Jussieu in his famous Genera Plantarum (1789). Today, the Common Guava remains an important vegetable fruit, valued for its delicious taste and nutritional benefits. The illustration serves as a beautiful testament to the botanical artistry of the past and the natural beauty of this versatile and beloved fruit.
