EDITORS COMMENTS
Consul the Chimpanzee: A Star of Early Edwardian Entertainment This photograph captures the enchanting presence of Consul, the renowned chimpanzee entertainer, who delighted audiences in London's Hippodrome and other prestigious venues during the early Edwardian era. Dressed in a dapper suit and holding a cigar, Consul exudes an air of mischievous charm that captivated spectators. Born in 1895, Consul was a popular attraction in the world of early 20th-century entertainment. His extraordinary intelligence and ability to mimic human behavior made him a sensation, and he was known for his impressive repertoire of tricks, including playing the banjo, smoking a cigar, and even riding a bicycle. However, the photograph also serves as a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of Consul's life. Despite his popularity, Consul's heavy smoking habit, which can be seen in this image, likely contributed to his untimely death in 1904 at the young age of 8. The cause of death was officially recorded as bronchitis, but it is believed that his addiction to smoking may have exacerbated his condition. Despite the sad ending to his story, Consul remains an iconic figure in the history of animal entertainment. His legacy continues to inspire wonder and fascination, reminding us of the unique bond between humans and animals that has captivated audiences for generations.
