EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Christian Leinberger and published in Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae of Kabinet van Zeldzaamheden der Natuur in 1771, showcases an intriguing collection of coral species. The central focus of the image is the lettuce coral, scientifically identified as Agaricia agaricites and Madrepora agaricites. These corals are named for their flat, leaf-like branches that resemble lettuce. Surrounding the lettuce coral are several other fascinating coral species. In the upper left corner, tiny worm holes are covered with stony coral, possibly belonging to Acropora abrotanoides or Madrepora abrotonoides. The former is characterized by its branching growth form and the latter by its encrusting growth form. To the right of the lettuce coral, a spherical clump of coral is depicted. While its identity is uncertain, it may be another species of Acropora or Madrepora. The intricate details of the coral structures are beautifully captured in this engraving, providing a glimpse into the diverse and intriguing world of corals. This engraving is a testament to the natural curiosity and scientific exploration of the 18th century. It was part of the Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities of P.L. Muller, a collection of rare and unusual objects from the natural world. The meticulous attention to detail and the artful presentation of the corals in this engraving continue to captivate viewers today, offering a window into the rich biodiversity of the ocean.
