EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Jean Victor Dupin junior for Pierre Joseph Buchoz's Herbier Artificial in 1783, showcases the intricate details of the Cuckoo-pint, or Arum maculatum. The plant is also known as the Syphilitic Arum due to its historical association with the symptoms of syphilis. The image depicts both the flower and fruit of the plant. The Cuckoo-pint derives its common name from the shape of its spathe, which resembles a cuckoo's head. The plant's fruit, shown here, is a distinctive red berry. In the context of syphilis, the association between the Cuckoo-pint and the disease is rooted in the belief that the plant's symptoms, such as chancres, were similar to those of syphilis. Chancres are indurated, or hardened, lesions that can appear on various parts of the body, including the face, eyelids, tongue, lips, chin, and forehead. These lesions are often ecthymatous, meaning they have a raised, rough texture. The engraving is a valuable scientific illustration, providing a detailed record of the appearance of the Cuckoo-pint and its association with syphilis. This image was later reproduced as a chromolithograph in the Atlas Iconographique des Maladies Veneriennes by Sinclaire, Freeman, and Bumstead in 1868. The Atlas was a comprehensive reference work on venereal diseases, including syphilis, gonorrhea, and other sexually transmitted infections. The image serves as a testament to the importance of scientific illustration in the study and documentation of various diseases throughout history. This engraving offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical understanding of the relationship between the Cuckoo-pint and syphilis, as well as the role of scientific illustration in medical research and documentation.
