EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the vulnerable Curly Palm, scientifically known as Howea belmoreana. The Curly Palm, also referred to as the Senegal Palm or the Phoenix Palm, is a beautiful and distinctive plant native to the tropical islands of Lord Howe and Norfolk in the Pacific Ocean. With its graceful, arching fronds and distinctive curled leaf tips, the Curly Palm is a popular addition to botanical gardens and horticultural collections around the world. Despite its beauty and allure, the Curly Palm is currently listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Threats to this species include habitat loss due to deforestation, as well as the collection of palms for the ornamental trade. The Curly Palm's natural habitat is limited, making conservation efforts essential for its survival. This illustration of the Curly Palm was created by Desire Bois for Edward Step's Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse, published by Frederick Warne in London in 1896. The Victorian-era gardening book showcases a variety of beautiful flowers and plants, including this exquisite depiction of the Curly Palm. The chromolithograph technique used to create this illustration involved the transfer of an image from a stone or metal plate to a sheet of paper using multiple layers of color. The result is a rich, detailed image that captures the essence of the Curly Palm and transports us to a time when botanical exploration and horticultural pursuits were at the forefront of scientific discovery.
