EDITORS COMMENTS

This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the history of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. Plate 569, featuring the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) and the herb Sauce-alone (Alliaria petiolata), showcases the intricate detail and precision of 19th-century scientific illustration. The bed bug, a member of the Hemiptera order, is depicted in the lower left corner of the plate, its flat, oval body and six legs clearly visible. Its piercing-sucking mouthparts are extended, ready to feed on the blood of its human host. The bed bug is an unwelcome intruder in homes, feeding on the blood of warm-blooded animals, including humans. In the upper right corner of the plate, the herb Sauce-alone, also known as Garlic Mustard or Erysimum alliaria, is illustrated in full bloom. The plant's distinctive white flowers and serrated leaves are beautifully rendered, providing a striking contrast to the monochromatic bed bug. John Curtis, FLS, was the esteemed botanical illustrator responsible for creating this exquisite plate. His meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy were unparalleled in his time. This image, along with the other plates in Curtis's British Entomology, remains a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as the importance of scientific documentation in the 19th century.
