This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the history of entomology and natural history publishing. Plate 700, featuring the Water Scorpion (Nepa cinerea) and the Arrowhead plant (Sagittaria sagittifolia), dates back to the 1820s-1830s. The plate is part of the extensive collection of John Obadiah Westwood, FLS, who was the principal illustrator for the series. The Water Scorpion, a member of the Hemiptera order, is aptly named for its predatory appearance and aquatic habitat.
