EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the history of entomology and natural history publishing. Plate 700, featuring the Water Scorpion (Nepa cinerea) and the Arrowhead plant (Sagittaria sagittifolia), dates back to the 1820s-1830s. The plate is part of the extensive collection of John Obadiah Westwood, FLS, who was the principal illustrator for the series. The Water Scorpion, a member of the Hemiptera order, is aptly named for its predatory appearance and aquatic habitat. With its elongated, jointed legs and pincer-like appendages, it resembles a miniature scorpion. This insect is an efficient hunter, using its long legs to propel itself through the water while capturing its prey with its powerful front legs. The Arrowhead plant, native to North America, is depicted in the foreground of the plate. Its scientific name, Sagittaria sagittifolia, refers to the arrow-shaped leaves and the arrow-like structures on the plant's inflorescence. This aquatic plant is an essential food source for various aquatic organisms, including the Water Scorpion. The intricate details of the Water Scorpion and the Arrowhead plant are beautifully rendered in this engraving, showcasing the meticulous work of the skilled illustrators and engravers of the time. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century, providing a valuable record of the rich biodiversity of the past.
