EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving is a beautiful representation of the Date Plum, or Diospyros lotus, as illustrated in Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), and engraved by Bozza. Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. The Date Plum, also known as the Common or European Date Plum, is a small tree or shrub that bears edible fruit. The fruit, which resembles a small plum, is typically oval in shape and has a smooth, glossy skin that can range in color from green to purple or red. The tree is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, and has been cultivated for its fruit and medicinal properties for thousands of years. In this illustration, the Date Plum is depicted with several other natural elements of the time. In the foreground, an eagle perches on a branch, adding a sense of scale and intrigue to the image. Nearby, a fern and common bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) can be seen, adding to the overall botanical theme. The illustration also features two other ferns, Pteris aquilina and Pteris aquilina, adding to the diversity of plant life represented. The intricate stipple engraving technique used in this illustration allows for a high level of detail and texture, bringing the Date Plum and its surrounding elements to life. The handcolouring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy, making this a truly stunning example of botanical illustration from the 19th century.
