Band Bear Brave Ceremonial Dakota Including Scarlet Shield Sioux Spirit Turban Mato Stickers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful photograph captures the courage and dignity of Mato Ohitika, also known as Wapepe or Stickers, the son of Wahacankaduta, or Scarlet Shield, the respected leader of the Spirit Lake band of the Cut Head (Pabaksa) Yanktonai (Ihanktonwanna) tribe of the Sioux and Dakota nations. Taken in the late 1800s by renowned photographer David Frances Barry, the image shows Wapepe in his traditional ceremonial attire, adorned with an otter pelt turban, or Otter n cap, feathers in his hair, and braids wrapped in fur. The eagle feathers attached to the turban signify his status as a chief or descendant of a chief. Mato Ohitika's strong gaze and proud posture convey a sense of unwavering resilience and determination in the face of adversity. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the rich cultural heritage and history of the indigenous peoples of North America.
