Controversial Doctor Lacy Physician Puritan Bastwick

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Controversial Figure in 17th Century England: Dr. John Bastwick, Puritan Physician and Writer Dr. John Bastwick (1593-1654), an English Puritan physician and writer, is depicted in this striking portrait, wearing a simple lacy collar. Born in London, Bastwick was a man of considerable intellect and conviction, who dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge in both medicine and theology. Bastwick's medical career began in the early 17th century, and he quickly gained a reputation as a skilled physician. However, it was his writing that would ultimately bring him both fame and infamy. A devout Puritan, Bastwick used his pen to challenge the established religious and political order of his time. He wrote and published numerous works criticizing the Church of England and advocating for the separation of church and state. One of Bastwick's most notable publications was his "An Humble Supplication," which was a scathing attack on the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud. This work earned Bastwick the wrath of the authorities, and he was arrested and brought to trial in 1637. Despite the risks, Bastwick continued to write and publish, even while in prison. Despite the danger, Bastwick's writings found a wide audience among the Puritan community, and he became a hero to many. However, his outspokenness ultimately led to his downfall. In 1638, Bastwick was tried and sentenced to death for blasphemy and sedition. He was hanged at Tyburn, becoming a martyr for the Puritan cause. This portrait of Dr. John Bastwick captures the intensity and conviction of a man who was not afraid to challenge the status quo, even at the risk of his own life. His legacy as a Puritan physician and writer continues to inspire and intrigue scholars and historians to this day.
