EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur" (The Butterflies Represented According to Nature), was created by Johann Carl Bock after the meticulous observations of Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers in 1786. The engraving showcases an intriguing assemblage of various Lepidoptera species, including the Dusky Sallow (Phalaena sallow), Ear Moth (Amphipoea oculea), Common Rustic (Mesapamea secalis), and several other moths such as the Grey Shoulder Knot (Cynaeda dentalis), Flounced Chestnut (Agrochola helvola), and Conformist (Furcifera conformis). The Dusky Sallow, depicted in the upper left corner, is a large and striking moth with a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters. Its wings are adorned with intricate patterns of brown and orange, while the Common Rustic, located in the lower right corner, boasts a wingspan of around 3 centimeters and features a distinctive orange-brown coloration. The Ear Moth, illustrated in the lower left corner, is a fascinating and lesser-known species. This moth derives its name from its unique habit of residing in the ear canal of rodents, where it lays its eggs. The larvae feed on the wax and debris within the ear, eventually pupating and emerging as adults. The other moths depicted in the engraving include the Rhizolithae (Caterpillars of Phalaena rhizolithae), Bifurca (Caterpillars of Phalaena bifurca), Lithophane (Lithophane ornitopus), and the Catenatae (Caterpillars of Phalaena catenata). This work of art not only highlights the intricacy and beauty of these creatures but also serves as a testament to the dedication and curiosity of naturalists like Espers and Bock in documenting the natural world.
