EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's renowned Book of the World published in Stuttgart in 1857, showcases an enchanting collection of large bird eggs. The image features a diverse array of avian species, each represented by an exquisitely detailed egg. Beginning with the extinct elephant bird, Aepyornis maximus, we see the largest egg in the image, measuring up to 1 foot long and 12 inches wide. Next to it, the ostrich, Struthio camelus, lays an egg that is approximately 12 inches long and 8 inches wide. The southern cassowary, Casuarius casuarius, contributes an egg that is about 10 inches long and 6 inches wide. Moving on, the Andean condor, Vultur gryphus, and bearded vulture, Gypaetus barbatus, both lay large, oval-shaped eggs, while the white-tailed eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla, produces an impressive, brownish-gray egg. The Eurasian sparrowhawk, Accipiter nisus, and the Baltimore oriole, Icterus galbula, are among the smaller birds featured, with their respective eggs measuring around 1.5 inches long. The ruby-topaz hummingbird, Chrysolampis mosquitus, lays the smallest egg in the image, measuring a mere 0.5 inches long. The song thrush, Turdus philomelos, and the various other birds displayed, each contribute their unique eggs to this stunning representation of the natural world. This image not only showcases the impressive size and diversity of bird eggs but also serves as a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century scientific illustration.
