Electric telegraph used in Crimean War, 1854
Electric telegraph used in the Crimean War, 1854. The plough for laying the wire. The wire is deposited by a subsoil plough in the ground, at a depth sufficient to protect it from ordinary casualties: the wire being coiled round a wheel revolving horizontally, attached to a carriage drawn in advance. The whole apparatus can be worked by the strength of eight men. The carriage and plough depicted here were sketched at Woolwich prior to their being sent to the seat of war. Date: 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the Electric Telegraph system in use during the Crimean War of 1854. The telegraph, a revolutionary means of long-distance communication, played a crucial role in facilitating swift and efficient information exchange between military commanders. In this photograph, we see the intricate machinery used for laying the wire, which was essential for the successful operation of the telegraph. The scene is set with a plough for laying the wire, which is deposited into the ground at a sufficient depth to protect it from ordinary damages. The wire is coiled around a wheel that revolves horizontally, attached to a carriage drawn in advance. The entire apparatus can be operated by the strength of eight men, demonstrating the manual labor required to establish this vital communication link. This photograph was sketched prior to the telegraph equipment being sent to the Crimea, the seat of the war. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a significant conflict between Russia and several European powers, primarily Britain, France, and the Ottoman Empire. The use of the electric telegraph during this war marked a turning point in military communication, enabling commanders to make informed decisions based on real-time intelligence. The electric telegraph, an innovation of the 1850s, revolutionized the way information was transmitted over long distances, paving the way for the development of modern communication systems. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the ingenuity and determination of the people involved in laying the foundation for a more interconnected world.
