EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment of camaraderie and creativity backstage at the Haymarket Theatre in London during the run of No Time for Comedy in 1941. At the heart of the image is the enigmatic presence of Elisabeth Welch (1904-2003), an African American singer and actress who had made London her home since 1933. A popular star of British musical theatre, films, television, and radio from the 1930s to the 1990s, Welch is seen here surrounded by some of the most notable figures of the British stage and screen. From left to right, Welch is flanked by Cecil Madden, Gerry Wilmot, Rex Harrison, Diana Wynyard, Carol Reed, and Lilli Palmer. Harrison, a renowned Shakespearean actor, had recently found success in film, while Wynyard was a respected stage and screen actress. Reed, an accomplished director, would go on to helm classics such as The Third Man and Oliver!, and Palmer was a German-born actress who had become a British citizen and a frequent collaborator with Reed. The atmosphere in the photograph is one of focus and anticipation, as the company prepares for another performance of No Time for Comedy. The production, a wartime farce written by Terence Rattigan, provided a much-needed escape for London audiences during the dark days of World War II. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the power of art to bring people together, even in the most challenging of times.
