EDITORS COMMENTS
Empire Day: A Symbol of Unity and Imperial Ties between Britain and Australia, 1909 This evocative photograph captures the spirit of Empire Day, as children from the Blackley Municipal School in Manchester, England, send a Union Jack flag as a token of their bond with their counterparts at Wellington Road School in Adelaide, Australia. Celebrated annually on Queen Victoria's birthday, May 24th, Empire Day was the brainchild of the Earl of Meath and aimed to instill a sense of pride and patriotism in children across the British Empire. The Union Jack flag, proudly displayed in this image, was a powerful symbol of the ties that bound the nations of the Empire together. The girls and boys of Blackley Municipal School, dressed in their finest attire, gathered around the flag before it was carefully packaged and sent off to Australia. The children of Wellington Road School would receive this gift as a reminder of the shared history, values, and aspirations that connected their two communities, thousands of miles apart. Empire Day was an opportunity for children to learn about the diverse peoples and cultures that made up the British Empire, fostering a sense of global citizenship and appreciation for the imperial ties that united them. The tradition of exchanging gifts and messages between schools in different parts of the Empire was a poignant reminder of the shared history and mutual respect that underpinned the British Empire at the turn of the 20th century. This photograph, taken in 1909, offers a glimpse into a bygone era, when the spirit of Empire Day brought children from all corners of the British Empire closer together, strengthening the bonds between nations and instilling a sense of pride and belonging in a generation of young people.
