This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Ingresso alla Cappella del S. Sepolcro" or "Entrance to the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre," dates back to the 1800s. The image is a beautiful reproduction from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1833. It is a fascinating depiction of a diverse group of people gathered at the entrance of the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, a significant Christian pilgrimage site located in Jerusalem. Among the crowd, we see representatives of the Osage Nation, an indigenous people from present-day Oklahoma, United States. The Osage men are dressed in traditional attire, including feather headdresses, scarves, and intricately painted faces. One brave Osage warrior stands out, his body adorned with necklaces, earrings, and other ornaments, his arm holding a weapon. A young Osage woman, dressed in a simple yet elegant costume, is also present, her face painted with traditional markings and her arms adorned with bracelets. The group includes a Native American chief, identifiable by his elaborate headdress and the respect paid to him by the other members of the tribe. A young Osage soldier, dressed in military uniform, stands guard, his determination evident in his posture.
