EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving, we are transported back in time to witness the ancient Etruscan rites dedicated to Faunus, the Etruscan god of nature, fertility, and wildlife. Faunus is also recognized as the counterpart of the Roman god Pan. The image showcases a lively scene of Faunus presiding over a sacrificial ritual. Faunus, depicted as a male figure with the horns, ears, and legs of a goat, is standing before an altar adorned with offerings. A carcass lies on the altar, ready to be consumed, while a group of priests and celebrants gather around, some of whom are dressed in Etruscan attire, while others wear more modern clothing, reflecting the historical context of the illustration. To the left, a female figure, possibly a priestess, dances gracefully, holding a bas or offering bowl in one hand and a branch of ivy in the other. Musicians play panpipes and other instruments, adding to the festive atmosphere. The scene is filled with a sense of reverence and joy, as the community comes together to honor their deity and seek his blessings. The intricate details of the engraving, created by Corsi from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," provide a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Etruscan civilization. This historical illustration not only showcases the religious practices of the ancient Etruscans but also offers a glimpse into their fashion and artistic sensibilities.
