EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving, titled "Plie, Carelet, Limande, et Sole" (Flatfish: Plaice, Dab, and Dover Sole), is a stunning example of naturalistic illustration from the 19th century. Created by the skilled hands of engraver du Casse, after an original illustration by Adolph Fries, this image is taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The engraving features three species of flatfish native to European waters: the European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, 1), the common dab (Limanda limanda, 1a), and the Dover sole (Solea solea, 2). The European plaice, with its distinctive fan-like markings, is shown on the left, while the common dab, characterized by its dark spots and mottled pattern, is depicted in the middle. The Dover sole, with its greyish-brown color and distinctive ridge along its back, is shown on the right. The intricate details of the fish's scales, fins, and gills are rendered with remarkable precision, showcasing the artists' mastery of their craft. The use of hand-coloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, making it a beautiful and accurate representation of these fascinating marine creatures. This engraving is not only a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the 19th century, but also a reminder of the rich biodiversity of European waters and the importance of preserving and celebrating the natural world.
