This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the European yew tree, Taxus baccata, a magnificent and historically significant species native to Europe and western Asia. The illustration is taken from Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical artists of the 19th century. The European yew tree is an evergreen conifer that can reach up to 20 meters in height. Its leaves are small, needle-like, and arranged in clusters. The tree is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers grow on separate trees. The female tree produces red, fleshy arils that surround the seeds, which are often referred to as "yew nuts."
