EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1823, showcases an enchanting collection of exotic birds from various parts of the world. The vibrant and intricately detailed illustrations bring to life six distinct avian species, each with their unique charm and allure. In the foreground, the female Rufous-tailed Jacamar (Galbula ruficauda) graces us with her presence. With her bright orange-red tail feathers and iridescent blue-green back, she is a sight to behold. Next to her, the Blue-throated Barbet (Megalaima asiatica) stands proudly, its blue throat and red beak adding a pop of color to the image. Moving on, the majestic Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) can be seen in the middle, its large size and striking blue and yellow plumage making it a standout among the others. The Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla), with its pink body and orange cheek patches, is depicted perched on a branch, while the Blue-crowned or Mindoro Racquet-tail (Prioniturus discurus) completes the lineup with its distinctive blue crown and long, fan-like tail feathers. The other birds featured in this illustration include the Macaw (Capito cyanocollis), known for its blue neck and red beak, and the Cacatua rosea, or Roseate Cockatoo, with its white plumage and pink and red crest. This stunning collection of exotic birds not only showcases the natural beauty of the avian world but also serves as a testament to the artistic prowess of the time.
