EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts False Nettle, Boehmeria caudata, a plant native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by L. Giarre under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. False Nettle, also known by its synonyms Spanante, Paniculata, Hydrocotyle corsi, and Idrocotyle caudata, is a herbaceous perennial that grows up to 1 meter tall. Its leaves are nettle-like, with serrated edges and a distinctive white veining. The plant produces small, greenish-white flowers in panicles, followed by small, round, black or red berries. False Nettle has a long history of use as a vegetable and medicinal plant. Its leaves and stems were eaten as a cooked vegetable, and the plant was used to treat various ailments, including dysentery, diarrhea, and skin conditions. The plant contains compounds that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. This beautiful illustration captures the intricate details of False Nettle's leaves, flowers, and berries, providing a window into the natural world of the 19th century. Turpin's masterful use of stipple engraving techniques adds depth and texture to the image, making it a true work of art. The illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the importance of documenting it for future generations.
