Female and male warden conferring in street, Sept 1939

Female warden in a steel helmet reading over the latest regulations with another warden, holding a helmet, in the middle of a busy Westminster street. Female wardens made up an estimated 1/6 of the c.1.4 million who served, although the Sphere notes the wardens gender in the caption " the steel helmet becomes familiar feminine headwear". The Sphere describes those passing by as " quite undisturbed".

EDITORS COMMENTS
"September 1939: A Moment of Serious Discussion Amidst the Hustle and Bustle of War-time London Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the early days of World War II, the streets of London continued to buzz with activity. In this evocative photograph taken in September 1939, two wardens, one female and one male, are deep in conversation, oblivious to the hustle and bustle around them. The female warden, dressed in a steel helmet and a dark uniform, is intently studying the latest regulations, while her male counterpart holds a helmet in hand. The presence of female wardens during this time was a testament to the crucial role women played in the war effort. An estimated one sixth of the 1.4 million who served were women, and they took on various roles, including as wardens, to help protect their communities during air raids. The steel helmet, once considered a symbol of masculinity, had become a familiar sight on the heads of feminine wardens. Despite the gravity of the situation, the scene in this photograph appears quite undisturbed. Passersby continue to go about their business, seemingly unfazed by the presence of the wardens. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of the British people during the early days of the war." Image Courtesy of Illustrated London News Ltd/Mary Evans.
