EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Field Gun and soldier statues, located in the grounds of the Plugstreet 14-18 Experience in Belgium. Inaugurated on November 9, 2013, this interpretation centre is housed beneath a glass pyramid, built to commemorate the events of World War I in the Ypres region of Ieper. The field gun and soldier statues, which are cut-outs made from steel sheets, serve as a poignant reminder of the military conflict that once ravaged this land. During the inauguration ceremony, a bas relief memorial to The Australian Mining Corps 1916-19 was unveiled by donor Ross J Thomas. This memorial pays tribute to the significant role that Australian mining companies played in the area during the war. Another identical version of this memorial can be found in Townsville, Australia. The Plugstreet 14-18 Experience is a testament to the history and sacrifices made during the First World War. The field gun and soldier statues, with their weathered and worn appearance, add to the authenticity and solemnity of this moving tribute. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the past, and the enduring impact of war on the lives of soldiers and civilians alike.
