EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Figures of Ancient Greek Kings," showcases an assemblage of esteemed rulers from Greek mythology, as depicted on ancient vases. The central figure, dressed in the style of Agamemnon from Homer's epic poems, is flanked by other illustrious monarchs. To the left, King Odysseus, the legendary hero of Homer's Odyssey, is depicted in the regal attire of the Phaeacians, the islanders who entertained him during his ten-year journey home from the Trojan War. He is accompanied by his wife, Penelope, and their son, Telemachus. To the right, King Alcinous, ruler of the Phaeacians, is shown with his wife, Arete, and their daughter, Nausicaa. Alcinous is known for his hospitality and wisdom, and his daughter played a crucial role in helping Odysseus return home. The figures are meticulously rendered, with intricate details that bring the mythological tales to life. The king dressed as Agamemnon wears an embroidered tunic, a cap adorned with a feather, and a mantle draped over his shoulders. The Thessalian style of the other figures is evident in their tunics, mantles, and the use of umbrellas for shade. This engraving is a stunning representation of ancient Greek culture and fashion, as captured in the artistry of ancient vases. It is an exquisite example from the collection of Sir William Hamilton, and was produced by the renowned Italian engraver, Corsi, for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World." The historical significance and artistic merit of this illustration make it an invaluable addition to any collection or study of ancient Greek mythology, history, or fashion.
