EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1802, showcases a breathtaking encounter between three distinct species of marine mammals: the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), the Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and the Northern Bottlenose Whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus). The Fin Whale, also known as the rorqual, is the second-largest animal on Earth, with adults reaching lengths of up to 80 feet. This endangered species is characterized by its long, curved pectoral fins, which can be up to a third of its body length. The Fin Whale is a filter feeder, consuming vast quantities of krill and other small organisms. Swimming gracefully alongside the Fin Whale are two Bottlenose Dolphins. These social and intelligent creatures are easily recognizable by their distinctive beak-like snouts and sleek, streamlined bodies. They are found in warm and temperate waters worldwide and are known for their acrobatic displays, such as breaching and tail-slapping. The Northern Bottlenose Whale, also known as the northern right whale dolphin, is a less common sighting compared to its bottlenose counterpart. This species is found in the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and is characterized by its distinctively shaped head, with a prominent bulge on its forehead. The Northern Bottlenose Whale is a toothed whale, feeding primarily on fish and squid. This stunning illustration not only provides a glimpse into the natural world of these fascinating marine creatures but also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving their habitats and ensuring their continued survival for future generations to enjoy.
