Fragments of Zeppelin, 1916

Three fragments obtained from a recently-destroyed Zeppelin. No 1. outer covering of Zeppelin (a doped fabric, i.e. a woven material treated with waterproofing solution). No 2. Inner lining of Zeppelin (finely woven and quite soft, probably some material as above but undoped). No 3. Fragment of Zeppelin gas bag (from one of the hydrogen gas bags. It is a piece of goldbeaters skin and appears incredibly thin and fragile). Date: 1916

Covering Fragment Fragments Lining May18 Outer Skin Zeppelin Zeppelins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph captures three fragments from a destroyed Zeppelin airship during World War I, dated 1916. The first fragment (No. 1) is a piece of the outer covering of the Zeppelin, which was made of a doped fabric - a woven material treated with a waterproofing solution. The second fragment (No. 2) is a portion of the inner lining of the Zeppelin, which was finely woven and quite soft, likely made of the same material as the outer covering but untreated. The third fragment (No. 3) is a piece of the Zeppelin's gas bag, taken from one of the hydrogen gas bags. This fragile piece, appearing incredibly thin and delicate, is a fragment of goldbeaters skin. Goldbeaters skin is a traditional material used for making thin, porous membranes for use in gas bags due to its ability to separate hydrogen gas from the liquid in which it is soaked. The Zeppelin, a symbol of German military prowess during the First World War, was a formidable weapon used for aerial bombing raids. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of war and the fragility of technology.
