EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcoloured lithograph, a group of elegant French women are depicted visiting the Cossack bivouac, which had been set up on the Champs Elysees in Paris following the fall of Napoleon in 1814. The women, dressed in the height of 19th-century fashion, are seen admiring the Tatar and Kalmyk Cossacks and their encampment. At the forefront of the image, a woman in a fur-lined coat with a matching fur muff is the focus of attention. Her dress, trimmed with intricate lace and adorned with a ruff collar, is accessorized with a feather bonnet and a parasol. She is crossing the bridge, the Pont des Arts, with a blind organ grinder and his dog in the background, adding to the lively scene. On the left side of the print, another woman is shown wearing a dress with a high waistline, a voluminous skirt, and a wide-brimmed hat adorned with a large bow. Her companion, dressed in a similar fashion, holds a handkerchief to her nose as she looks at the Cossacks with fascination. The Cossacks themselves are depicted in their traditional attire, with fur hats, long coats, and weapons at their side. Their horses are tethered nearby, adding to the sense of adventure and excitement. This image, created by R.V. after an illustration by Francois Courboin and published in Octave Uzanne's Fashion in Paris in 1898, offers a glimpse into the society and culture of the Bourbon Restoration period in France. The blend of fashionable women and the exotic Cossacks highlights the intersection of arts, aesthetics, and the curiosity of the time.
