EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th century image, a copperplate engraving by D. Jenkins after an illustration drawn from life by J. Roberts, depicts a gentleman fencer in the midst of a decisive lunge against his opponent. The scene is taken from Mr. J. Olivier's Fencing Familiarized, or A New Treatise on the Art of Sword Play, published in London in 1771. The gentleman fencer, dressed in the elegant attire of the time, expertly executes a semicircular parry, or "parade du demi-cercle," which allows him to turn his body in a semicircle, creating a larger target for his opponent while shielding his own. With a swift and powerful thrust, he stabs his sword through his adversary, demonstrating the precision and skill required in the art of fencing during this era. The intricate details of the engraving, from the creases in the gentlemen's coats to the expressions on their faces, transport us back in time to the salle d'armes of the 18th century, where the art of swordplay was a refined and essential skill for the gentleman.
