EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the momentous occasion when George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, was appointed as the Viceroy of India in 1898. At the time of this photograph, taken by the renowned British portrait artist Sydney P. Hall, Curzon was known as Lord Curzon of Kedleston. The Marquess, a prominent Conservative statesman, had already made a name for himself in British politics, serving as Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Under-Secretary of State for India. Curzon's appointment as Viceroy marked the beginning of an influential period in Indian history. During his tenure, he created the territory of Eastern Bengal and Assam, expanding the British Empire's reach in the region. His reforms focused on modernizing infrastructure, improving education, and increasing economic development. After leaving India in 1905, Curzon continued his political career, serving as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1919 to 1924. His diplomatic efforts during this time helped shape the political landscape of Europe in the aftermath of World War I. This portrait, taken at the onset of Curzon's illustrious career as Viceroy of India, stands as a testament to his remarkable accomplishments and enduring impact on British and Indian history.
